Great places to visit from Marbella – Setenil de Las Bodegas

Setenil de las Bodegas

This beautiful Andalusian village, with a population of about 3,000 inhabitants has been voted amongst the most beautiful places to visit in Europe.  It is a pretty whitewashed village built on both sides of the Rio Trejo within a dramatic gorge created by the river in years gone by.

What makes Sentenil such a spectacular place to visit is the way past generations of the village have made their homes and livings in buildings built into the rock walls of the gorge.  Two areas are particularly striking to visit the Calles Cuevas del Sol and the Calle Cuevas del Sombre, which translate into the street of the caves in the sun and the street of the caves in the shade.

Here there are numerous shops, restaurants and bars built under the dramatic overhanging rocks.  On the Calle Cuevas de Sombre the whole road is covered by the overhanging rocks creating the shade described in the street name.

Calle Jaboneria (named after the now closed soap factory) at the North of Calle Cueves del Sol offers a beautiful walk down beside the river, out of the village passing the local houses built into the rocks, with superb views of the village centre, it’s church and the 12th century castle.

In the hilly town centre near the church there are beautiful plazas, such as the Plaza de Andalucia, with great bars and restaurants to visit while taking in the pretty village views.
